Approx. 10 hours - Monday, Thursday, Saturday from 1 March to 31 October. Monday and Friday from 1st Nov. to 28th Feb. (minimum 6 people) Leaving Rome in a northerly direction, we will cross the valley of the Tiber river. We reach Orvieto where we stop to visit the magnificent 14th century cathedral, a masterpiece of gothic architecture. The tour continues through the green hills covered in olive groves and vineyards. This is the land of some Italian best known wines, such as Orvieto, Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino. We will stop to taste local wine and typical Umbrian products. Lunch too will be of traditional local dishes. In the early afternoon we reach Assisi and start an unforgettable walk through the narrow streets of the ancient town which sweeps the flanks of Monte Subasio. You will then visit with our guide the Church of Santa Chiara, the site where St. Francis was born and then on to see the house where he spent the first years of his life. You will then reach the very heart of the town, the Piazza del Comune (Town Hall square), with its roman and medieval buildings. Then, near the ancient city walls, you will visit the Basilica of St Francis, which houses inside the tomb of the Saint. The interiors are decorated with frescoes from the 12th and 13th centuries. After the visit our tour leader will take you to a typical restaurant, where you will have the chance to taste the traditinal umbrian specialties. After lunch you will reach on foot the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli to visit the small Portiuncola chapel and the site where St. Francis died in 1226. The return journey will be via Perugia, ancient Etruscan town and capital of the region, and Todi, lovely hilltown of central Italy. Approximal arrive time in Rome will be around 17,30 / 18,00 and then return to, or nearby your hotel. Useful information: We would reccomend that you wear comfortable clothes and shoes. We ask you to pay particular attention to your guide and to wear sunglasses and sunhats in the summer months to avoid any risk of sunstroke. We remind you that entrance into churches requires appropriate attire (no shorts, miniskirts or uncovered shoulders)
